McDonald’s Nasi Lemak Burger

There was a lot of nasi lemak versions of food being created recently, from burgers to ice creams. McDonald’s even jumped on the bandwagon and have their own version of the nasi lemak which comes in the form of a burger.

Nasi lemak means “oily rice” in direct English translation. It is basically rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf, which is usually served with cucumber slices, egg and sambal sauce (a kind of spicy sauce). Then the usual additional side dish to eat along with nasi lemak are fried chicken, anchovies with peanuts, keropok (fried crackers) and sometimes squid.

A few weeks ago after attending a talk event, I went to McDonald’s for my dinner which is very late at night and tried their nasi lemak burger. I don’t eat spicy food, so I asked them if the sambal sauce was spicy but the waitress at the counter didn’t know. She had to go and ask her other colleagues and they said that it wasn’t spicy. So I requested for them to remove the sambal and put it aside in a separate container in case the sambal sauce is too spicy.

This is how the burger looks like and that’s the sambal sauce in the clear container with spoon :

The chicken patty is not too bad in terms of size, it’s quite big as compared to the burger buns. There’s fried egg, cucumber slices and sauteed onion. The cucumber slices are kind of a sad case, only 2 miserable pieces. This is how the insides of the burger filling looks like :

I tried the sambal sauce, it wasn’t spicy and was sweet. It’s just a very tiny little bit of chilli taste in it, which is just fine for me. I like it when it’s not spicy. Sometimes when food is cooked with a lot of chilli, it masks the actual taste of the food and you can’t really taste whether the food is tasty or not. Not unless it’s like a curry or rendang dish where you need to have chilli in it, otherwise you can’t taste the actual taste of the food. Ask the cook to remove the chilli and you can test whether the cook cooks good food or not when you taste the non-spicy food.

Overall, the nasi lemak burger was alright and if included with the sambal sauce, it tasted good. I like that the chicken patty is big in size.

Dinner at Y Food Box Signature, Gurney Drive (Previously Known As Sea Brew)

I went to Sea Brew Y Food Box Signature, Gurney Drive at the end of April 2018 to have dinner. The restaurant used to be known as Sea Brew but has now been revamped after their renovation and is now known as Y Food Box Signature.

They have a lot of food and beverages choices for you to choose from. These are their menu selections. Click on the picture to enlarge it and view the menu.

They have a few branches in Perak, in Penang island and also at Butterworth.

After browsing through the menu and with recommendation from Mr. Francis Chang, who is a food consultant and one of the owners of Y Food Box Signature, the food order was made. They call it “studying the menu” because we need to go through each item in the menu and sometimes it takes quite long. If studying the menu requires remembering each item, then I’m out. I doubt I will remember every single item in the menu especially if it’s such a long list of items. Those working in this industry who can remember all their venue’s food items have such amazing memory skills.

I ordered the Winter Melon Longan drink. I was told they cooked this on their own, so it’s worth a try.

For dinner, I had rice with stir-fried vegetables, Foo Yoong omelette and a claypot meat dish. I like their rice because it was well-cooked and has this slight stickiness to it, a bit like Japanese rice. Their vegetable and egg dish was tasty.

The meat dish was supposed to be chicken but it was served as pork instead.  The chicken turned into piggy in the process of cooking it. The sauce was a bit too salty for me.  It could be because I don’t normally eat very salty food on a daily basis and I grew up with my Mummy cooking less salty, less oily, almost no sugar and non-spicy food as our daily staple diet. This claypot meat dish would be ideal for those who are used to taking saltier kind of dishes. I requested for them not to put chilli in the dish and they didn’t, so that was great.

The restaurant has a few different settings and furnitures for you to choose your choice of seating. They have a wine room where they store their wine in. I wouldn’t call it a wine cellar as it’s more of an enclosure, like in a room with air-conditionng. I love that place because it’s cooling with cold air, it has a chandelier, it has alcohol in there and best of all, it’s very quiet. So quiet that no outside sound can penetrate the room and you can hear the wind blow from the air-conditioning.

They have a very different kind of decoration at their place as well. Like these pool of lamp shades at their counter facing the entrance of the restaurant.

If you’re looking for some home-cooked style dishes with rice or if you’re looking for a place to chill with some wine, you would want to visit this restaurant. Their location at Gurney Drive makes it pretty easily accessible.
